Learn Essential Drawing Techniques

 CLASSICAL DRAWING BASIC

Renaissance masters typically started with drawing to seek ways to represent ideal forms and beauty. At Galvez Atelier, the student will understand the importance of lines when drawing. He or she will observe and apply techniques in implying textures, rendering details, deciphering tonal values, creating implied depth, and molding shapes by distinguishing light from shadow. The student will also learn to compare parts to a whole and how they generate organic unity as seen in the form.

Draw from Life

 CLASSICAL DRAWING INTERMEDIATE

Life drawings refer to portraits or the full human figure that are rendered based on an actual model posing inside the studio. This method will allow the student to grasp the three-dimensional form of the body or the face and observe poses of figures. The student will understand balance in visual weight and the nuances of gesture. Meanwhile, sessions in portraiture will allow the student to learn the anatomical structure of the face, proper blocking, and simple techniques to capture the likeness of the model.

Traditional Oil Painting

After learning the fundamentals of drawing using pencils, the student will learn to render forms using the brush. He or she will be introduced to the medium and the tools of oil painting. The Galvez Atelier Traditional Oil Painting  have several components.

Gaining Control Over Color Mixing

The student will learn to work using limited colors to gain a more efficient understanding of the color palette. He or she will learn processes in achieving color harmony and balance by identifying color groupings, distinguishing color temperatures, and understanding contrasts. The student will also increase his or her sensitivity to tonal values and composition. These processes will allow the student to paint efficiently, a skill needed when the student eventually uses other  fast drying media like acrylic.

Building up Underpainting

Fine art works in the canon of art history should serve as exemplary models not to intimidate but to

emulate. At Galvez Atelier, the student will experience the time-tested methods of classical masters. Underpainting provides the foundation for applying multiple layers of colors in succeeding processes.

Layering Colors Made Easy

Color is light. Our summer art workshops teach how each layer of colors channels light. The student will learn the correct way of applying layers of colors. This segment shares similar principles in watercolor painting.

On why the academic method

"Classical Realism is a 20th century movement where we go back to the

foundations of drawing, painting, and sculpture disrupted by modern and the so-called post-modern art. First, we teach that it is important for first-time students of art to develop observational skills that are quite essential not only the fine arts but also in all visual arts and even in the design industry. Only through a curriculum based on the perfected methods of the classical masters that was passed on for centuries since the Renaissance can the student learn how to draw and paint in the fastest and most efficient way. Art is a discipline that requires training and mastery. Therefore, it is imperative that students gain an understanding of tools and media. Art is also a process. I believe that the atelier method or an academic training rooted in classical realism can even enable artists and designers to become more conscious of their workflows. As we say, there will be no accidents because knowing the process eases the completion of art and design projects. For example, we start with the end in mind --a vision -- analyze backwards, and execute forward. Thus, the artist or the designer gains full control of his or her planned idea and creates based on the kind of visual experience he or she desires to offer to the viewer."

Skills first, creative process later

"Classical Realism is actually contemporary art but with a nostalgic flavor.

However, we don't impose styles in Galvez Atelier. Instead, we always remind the students that we are a training school and not a movement that dictates what art should be. We focus on skills that are essential to the creative process and equip the students with the proper foundations. Even if students decide to render abstractions, conceptual art, and seek anti-aesthetic directions that require deskilling, I believe that our training is still essential in the understanding of the art process. After all, what is there to deskill when if in the first place the artist has no skills to deskill?"

image1151

Discipline, confidence and attitude

"What do I plan to impart? I guess it all boils down to these three: discipline,

confidence, and attitude. Discipline is knowing art as a process. All students will appreciate the importance of structured and guided lessons. Discipline can also mean observation. We live in a digital age where images flash in a split second in front of our eyes. The academic method disciplines the student to observe every element of art that encompasses a whole by looking at one image for hours and even days. Confidence refers to the fact that methods in Classical Realism help students draw with ease and clarity. Because we insist on efficient workflows, discipline, and processes, the student

gains full control over his or her artwork. Attitude is self-explanatory: one must have the right attitude in order to gain the full benefits of learning and developing one’s skills. This is what students of Galvez Atelier can anticipate."

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

2021 Intensive Drawing+Painting Workshop

 Alfred Galvez

Atelier Director

Alfred Galvez was exposed to Filipino masters at an early age. After spending much of his childhood in Davao City, he studied at the Philippine Highschool for the Arts in Makiling, Laguna. Eventually, Galvez studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman. At 17, he became an apprentice of Mariano Madarang from the Philippine Women’s University. He trained in the restoration and conservation of the paintings of Fernando Amorsolo, Carlos Francisco, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, and Juan Luna. Keen to develop his expertise, Alfred travelled to international shores in 2007 and studied under Marco Cavallini. The Bottega Arte in Florence, Italy is esteemed for trompe l’oeil techniques. Aside from the traditional Florentine approach to murals, the studio was also known for the architectural illusionistic technique called quadraturism. The artistic practice of Galvez ranges from portraits, murals, faux finishes transform the abode into a resplendent space. Alfred Galvez established AG murals in 2003. Together with younger muralists, he established MIKRA FAUX. The Kuwentong Diwata Series of Alfred Galvez have enthralled many art audiences and have been exhibited in galleries in Metro Manila. Pinoiserie, a series inspired by Filipino rural sceneries and leitmotifs invented by Galvez was also well received by gallerists and interior design specialists.
